Concordia College Selma, Alabama, Head Coach Fredrick Summers

After four successful seasons at Concordia College in Selma, Alabama, Head Coach Fredrick Summers and his team is returning to the 2016-2017 USCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Tournament for their fourth season in a row.

Fredrick Summers is a native of Memphis, Tennessee. He started his journey as head coach at Concordia College of the men’s basketball team in October 2012. The 2012-2013 season turned out to be the most complicate season since Summers’ tenure. The bristly schedule along with fifteen new players attempting to learn his coaching style and preferences led to the Hornets failing to qualify for the National Tournament 7-14.

Despite the struggles of the 2012-2013 season, Concordia Hornets bounced back the following year by winning 13 more games. The 2013-2014 season produced their first national tournament appearance since 2004. What is more, Coach Summers led the Hornets to the 2014-2015 USCAA Men’s Division I National Tournament semifinals.  The Hornets finished as the National Tournament runners up the following season 2015-2016. I have a feeling Summers and his team will place number one at the USCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Tournament on March 5, 2017.

The key ingredients to a successful basketball team are trust and unity amongst the coach and team. The young basketball players of today are the up and coming future stars of tomorrow. As leaders, head basketball coaches have an obligation to help, lead, train, and mentor tomorrow’s leaders. Developing and keeping today’s youth on the path of achievement isn’t an easy task. Summers believes mentoring players to be successful entails time, whereas both coach and players can learn about one another and build an environment of trust that creates an atmosphere in which the players can feel secure.

This methodology has proven to be a valuable and effective technique given the fact that the Concordia Hornets is headed to USCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Tournament on March 2, 2017 through March 5, 2017.

Congratulations to Coach Summers and the Concordia Hornets for advancing to the USCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Tournament for  four consecutive years.
